How To Get Coffee Stains Out Of Carpet - VICTORIA CARPET CARE

When it comes to spilled coffee, time is of the essence, the sooner you can treat these spills, the less likely that there will be a stain.
Step 1

• For large stains, work from the outside of stain to the center to prevent spreading.
• Blot up liquid spills with a white towel or paper towel.
• Mix a solution of 1/4 teaspoon of clear hand dishwashing detergent with 1 cup of water. Stir gently.
• Apply detergent solution directly to a white cloth. Dampen the carpet fibers in the stained area with the cloth. Avoid saturating the carpet.
• Wipe gently. Turn cloth frequently. Never rub, scrub or use a brush. This may damage carpet fibers.
• If necessary, use your fingertips to work the solution to the base of the stain.
• Wet the stained carpet fibers with clear, lukewarm water to rinse.
• Cover the spot with an absorbent white towel or paper towel and apply pressure to blot.
• Repeat the rinsing and blotting procedures until you are sure all traces of the detergent have been removed.
• If the stain is gone, place an absorbent white towel or paper towel over the area cleaned, and weigh towels down with a heavy, color-fast object, such as a weighted plastic wastebasket.
• Change towels or paper towels until carpet dries.
• If stain remains, proceed to Step 2.

Step 2

• Mix 1 cup of white vinegar with 2 cups of water.

Apply vinegar solution, rinse and blot as outlined in Step 1.

Its that time of the year! I noticed my first Fruit Fly in the kitchen last night! As you know these little critters can become a real nuisance in the home, especially in the kitchen. I have decided this would be a great time to post my favorite non-toxic way of getting rid of those pesky little bugs. Hopefully you will find this article helpful! Once fruit flies have descended upon your space, they can be extremely difficult to get rid of. Follow these tips to keep the pesky bugs out of your kitchen for good. It's that time of the year that I am starting to notice those little fruit flies in the kitchen. There are many of things you could do to prevent fruit fly infestations, like keeping rotting or overripe fruit out of your kitchen, but once they are in your house…well they just seem to never go away. Start by putting all ripened fruit or vegetables like onions, tomatoes, and potatoes in the refrigerator and cleaning recycling bins that hold empty bottles and cans to eliminate the sources of attraction and breeding.

My personal favorite non-chemical, non-toxic, technique for trapping and killing fruit flies involves apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish soap.

Here are the simple instructions:

1. Pour a cup of apple cider vinegar into a jar or small bowl.

2. Add a couple drops of dish soap to the jar.

3. Place in the area where you've seen the fruit flies, and wait for the trap to do its job.

Why This Works:

This works because Fruit flies are attracted to the smell of the vinegar, and will try to land on its surface. But, they're in for a surprise – since the dish soap breaks the surface tension of the vinegar, the fruit flies fall in and drown.

The result is a lot of dead fruit flies, which can be conveniently poured down your drain.

1. Vacuum, Vacuum, Vacuum. As a general rule vacuum traffic areas 3 to 5 times per week. This will prevent dirt from settling into the carpet. Walking on dirt and grit that has settled to the base of the fibers causes an abrasive action, which results in the appearance of traffic lanes and worn areas.
2. Clean up spills immediately, before they become permanent stains. You may refer to our spotting guide online, which can be found at http://www.victoriacarpetcare.ca/Stain-Tips-DIY-Guide.html This will provide you with directions on how to proceed in removing spills. 3. Have your carpet professionally cleaned on a regular basis. They should be cleaned every 6-12 months depending on the amount of “traffic” in the house. (i.e. kids, pets, shoes, etc.) Clean high traffic areas about twice as often as other areas.
4. Reapply Carpet Protector each time the carpet is cleaned to keep stains from setting in and the soil from grinding in. More information can be found on our website.
5. Place walk off mats inside and outside every entrance to your home.
6. Place mats or bound remnants on top of the carpet at high wear areas, such as in front of the sofa or chairs and entry/exit points from the carpet.
7. Placing smooth plastic chair mats under chairs in front of desks may help to prevent carpet delaminating and wear.
8. Remove your shoes when you enter your home.
9. Control the circulation and disposal of food and drink through the home.
10. Use a powerful upright vacuum with a beater brush and excellent filtration system for carpets. Be sure to change the disposable bag often to ensure efficient operation.
11. Take your vacuum in for a checkup to the vacuum repair shop annually to keep it operating at peak performance.

With the number of home floods escalating due to the extremely wet weather in Victoria BC, a number of rugs will be exposed to flood water.

The longer a rug remains wet the more likely it is to have dye migration that is not correctible. Rugs that are not washed properly and dried thoroughly can end up with mildew and dry rot problems.

Here are tips to minimize the damage of rugs involved in floods:

• Make sure you extract WITH the direction of the rug’s fiber nap, instead of against it (this minimizes fiber damage).
• If you are unable to have the rugs thoroughly washed right away, then it’s important to get the rugs as dry as possible to stop the damage risks. Dry them and wash them later.
• When transporting to a facility to be cleaned, wrap in towels or sheets to prevent dry from migration from one rug to another.
• Do NOT hang up wet rugs. Extract and dry out flat.
• Do NOT dry in direct sunlight. Most contemporary rugs are sensitive to sunlight fading. If you must dry in sunlight, lay the rugs face down so fading occurs on the back side only until the rugs are taken to a cleaning facility.

Wool and silk oriental rugs can take months, sometimes years, to weave by hand. If you have investment textiles you want to protect from a flood that has affected your home, simply follow those guidelines and you can lessen the risk of permanent damage to your rugs due to extended exposure to water.

How To Remove Chocolate Stains From Carpet - Carpet Cleaning: VICTORIA CARPET CARE

Tips:

• Remove chocolate substance from carpeting by hardening it first with ice, then scraping it out with a knife.
• Avoid scrubbing the chocolate stain so you don't spread it.

Instructions:

1. Remove as much of the chocolate stain substance as possible with a spoon
2. Place a layer of paper towels over the chocolate stain and blot with your hands to remove as much stain moisture or liquid as you can. Toss out soiled paper towels and continue to blot with clean paper towels until there's no further transfer of chocolate to the paper towels.
3. Before applying any solution to your carpet, test in an inconspicuous area, such as inside a closet. If discoloration occurs, do not use.
4. Use a mixture of 1 cup of cool water, with 1/2 teaspoon of household ammonia, and 2 drops of mild dishwashing detergent.
5. Apply the solution to the spot using a spoon to work the solution into the center of the spot from the outside edge. Do not rub too hard or fast as this could permanently distort the carpet fibers and damage them. Never use a brush for the same reason.
6. Blot with towel, repeat until there is no more residue transferring to the towel.
7. It is always good to poor on a little cool water to rinse out any cleaning solution and blot it up too. You may wish to lay 1/2 inch of paper towels or a cotton towel folded several times on the area that you treated and put a heavy weight of about 5 to 10 pounds on it overnight. This reduces the chance of any residue resurfacing later. Putting a fan on the area can also help.
8. If there is some color remaining, it may be necessary to call in a professional carpet cleaner like one of Cleaning Specialists at Victoria Carpet Care who can use more specific and more potent products to attempt removal.

1. Vacuum frequently and thoroughly. Dirt is the number one cause of wear and tear to your carpet. Be sure that you are vacuuming thoroughly at least once per week to keep the dry soils to a least amount and get the most out of the life of your carpet.

2. Clean up spots and spills quickly and correctly. To properly remove a spot use a clean absorbent towel (preferably a white one to avoid color transfer) and hot tap water in a spray bottle containing a small amount of a mild detergent – just make sure the detergent does not contain bleaching agents. Next, alternate blotting and spraying the area, DO NOT over wet the spot. You can even place a dry absorbent towel under something heavy like a book to completely remove the moisture from the carpet. Most spots can be removed if they are caught early. Of course the exceptions are, if a spill contains a dye, (i.e. red juice) or a bleaching agent then the spot is usually permanent.

3. Never scrub or rub spots. The correct method to remove a spill is to scrape the spot towards the middle and then blot with a white towel or cloth. History Of The Vacuum Cleaner - Carpet Cleaners in Victoria, BC

As a Victoria Carpet Care Cleaner we find the history of the vacuum cleaner to be very fascinating. After carpet had been introduced into homes and businesses it only made sense to find something to clean them. This "something" was the vacuum cleaner. Did you know that the first vacuum cleaner was built in the mid 1800s. In fact, the original vacuum cleaner was invented prior to the US civil war. Daniel Hess of West Union, Iowa, invented a vacuum cleaner in 1860, calling it a carpet sweeper instead of a vacuum cleaner. His machine did, in fact, have a rotating brush like a traditional carpet sweeper, and also had a mechanism on to create suction of dust and dirt. On July 10, 1860 Hess received a patent for his invention of the vacuum cleaner. This is where it all started!

In the years that followed, there were some other designs, but the first real success story comes about 20 years later. That is when a man named Melville Bissell invented his push version of the vacuum cleaner for his wife. The Bissell name is still going strong to this day. Melville's vacuum cleaner was so popular that he started Bissell as a company and later his wife ran it and became one of the most success women in business in her day. Although Bissell's design was an step up and was successful, but it still wasn't quite what you think of compared to the vacuums that we use in our homes today. Never the less it was pretty remarkable for the 1870s.

Over the following years there were many attempts to make a better carpet cleaning vacuum, but it was James Spangler in 1907 that ultimately invented a piece of equipment that resembles the models that we use in our homes and businesses today. It was portable, used suction, had a bag for the dust and debris that was sucked up (made using a pillowcase), and had a rotating brush to help loosen and lift the dirt from the carpet.

Unfortunately for James, he was a janitor by trade and not a businessman. He did not have the resources or wealth to follow his invention and decided to sell his invention to his cousin Hoover who became very rich from the invention. Today Hoover is still going strong in the vacuum cleaning business and most of us recognize the Hoover name. It was also James that we can thank for helping with the invention of the disposable bags that some homeowners still use in the upright model of vacuum cleaner.

It is always interesting to learn a little bit about the origins of some of the things we use every day. And if you own a carpet, a vacuum cleaner is one of those things.
