How Often Should I Vacuum?

Vacuum the entire carpeted area at least once a week. That depends on the amount of foot traffic and household soil to which your carpet is exposed. More use means more frequent vacuuming. Victoria Carpet Care recommends a vacuum cleaner with a rotating brush or “brush/beater bar” to agitate the pile and mechanically loosen soil particles. The exception to this is for shag styled products with longer yarns which might tend to wrap around a rotating brush. For these styles we recommend a suction-only vacuum.

Also, be aware that some vacuums have overly aggressive action which may damage the surface of your carpet. An inexpensive, less efficient vacuum can remove surface dirt but will not effectively remove the hidden particles embedded in the pile.

While vacuuming on a regular basis is essential, deep cleaning is essential to remove stubborn or embedded stains. This process will keep your carpets looking new for a longer period of time and will save you money in the long run.Get your carpets professionally cleaned every 6-12 months. NOTHING extends the life of your carpet like this step. Even dirt you cannot see can be deep inside the carpets breaking down and wearing the fibers. It’s the only way to prevent permanent traffic lanes and wear patterns. Remember this rule of thumb: Clean before your carpet LOOKS dirty to prevent wear and tear – it’s time not dirt that you should judge by.

Get your carpet professionally protected at least every other cleaning. The factory finish is removed with wear and cleanings. This finish is a protective barrier between your carpet and soils, oils, stains and general wear and tear. Ignoring this step will shorten the life span of your carpet considerably.

Ready to begin decorating around your rug? Getting the size right is really important. If the rug is too big for the room, it will make the room look smaller so leave a couple of feet around it. Although there are no rules, it's good to have at least the front two legs of a sofa on a rug because that anchors it. Be sure that a dining room rug is large enough so that the chairs are still on it when pulled out (allow at least two feet for that).

Knot count refers to how many knots there are in a rug in a certain area--the higher the knot count, the longer it takes to weave the rug because it's more work. However, that doesn't make a lot of difference in the actual quality of the rug. It will be strong either way, but it will be slightly stronger if it has a high knot count.

If the rug has a simple design, a high knot count isn't something to worry about. Check for quality by looking at the back of the rug. To see if it's handmade, flip it over and look to see if the knots are quite uneven. If you can't see the knots on the back, it's probably not handmade. Plus, the finer the rug, the clearer the design will be on the back.

Turn a rug every six months if it's in direct sunlight to get an even amount of exposure.

Finally, if a rug sheds when you get it home, don't panic. A lot of high-quality rugs will shed for a month or so.

How to Clean Mascara and Eyeliner From Carpet ~ Carpet Cleaning and Stain Removal, Victoria BC

Mascara and Eye-liner: You will need ¼ quarter teaspoon of mild dishwashing soap mixed with 1 cup of warm water.

1. Remove any excess or caked-on make-up with a cloth or plastic spoon, being careful not to rub or grind the stain into the fiber.

2. Pour a small amount of cleaning solution onto a cloth, making sure it is damp, but not saturated.

3. Test a small, not noticeable area of the carpet with the cleaning solution prior to treating the stain to make sure your carpet tolerates the solution well.

4. Blot the stain with the cleaning solution using a firm lifting motion. DO NOT rub as this may drive the stain deeper into the carpet.

5. Repeat until stain is removed or no more color is lifted off on the cloth.

6. Spray the area lightly with clean water from the spray bottle to rinse.

7. Blot with a clean white cloth to remove any remaining residue.

8. Place another white cloth on the wet spot and weigh it down with a book or other heavy item.

9. Let this sit for a few hours to absorb any excess water.

10. Remove weight and towels and allow area to air-dry.

11. When area is completely dry, vacuum thoroughly to restore texture and remove any remaining residue.

Very Important Additional Information:

• Never use a cleaning solution that contains lanolin or bleach as this may damage your carpet.
• Always read and follow all care instructions and warnings provided by the carpet manufacturer.
• Rugs and carpets with natural fibers and/or certain dyes may require special treatment. Even if you have the slightest doubt, always contact a cleaning professional for advice or service.
• If you have an oriental rug or if your carpet is wool or silk, it is highly recommended that you have the stain removed professionally by Victoria Carpet Care. These types of rugs/carpeting are delicate and may not be color fast. Make sure you call one of our Carpet Care Specialists who are familiar with the type of rug/carpet you have. When in doubt as to the type of material your carpet or Oriental rug is made of, check the tag, or check with the retailer/installer for your carpet.
• Avoid walking on the carpet if it is damp. Make sure any spots you cleaned are dry before you walk on them. Did you know wet carpet fibers attract more dirt than dry?! You may end up with a bigger stain than you bargained for if you don't wait till the carpets are completely dry.
